I am a handsome woman with light brown skin and low fade into thick dark hair
Dressed in ironed dark polos, slacks, and dress shoes for footwear
How my masculine appearance and gender will slow you down to find the time to stare
To ask yourself is that a woman or a man
How does one compare?
When I am in love
Believe me, I am in love
But some may not accept these relationships since it’s written as inappropriate in the societal
script
But when have I ever followed such a heteronormative manuscript
So, I let her run along my sharp jaw line with her soft fingertips
As I caress this beauty around her hips
He stands with a wish that my existence didn’t exist
As he recognizes that I’m a threat to his masculinity
Then he questions how can a woman want a woman that appears like a man deliberately
Why does this masculine woman lack the importance of femininity
Now he thinks he’s one woman short to want him religiously
As if my gender and sexuality were enough for an introduction
They pull my brown roots from the ground up into discussion
Look how our melanin suffers from bias assumptions
The ones society creates as well as racist repercussions
How can we progress to fully understand each other
If they get defensive and target every person of color
See I don’t walk alone I’ve learned to walk in unity
How my actions and words are the face of my community
Yet my good deeds don’t save me or provide immunity
When I’m still the hungry Mexican trying to steal American opportunity
Yes, I’m hungry but I’m hungry for strength
The strength our queer ancestors had has they fought to great lengths
The strength our masculine women have to overcome daily obstacles
The strength our people of color had when they felt it was impossible
Immerse in their strength so we the triple threat can remain unstoppable
