Her milk came in. Her baby was gone.

Dear Community,

Somewhere tonight, a mother is listening for a cry she cannot answer. Her milk has come in. Her arms are empty. Her baby is in another room, another building, another country. Her body is doing exactly what it was made to do, and the world has made it impossible for her to respond.

Late at night, when the house is quiet and I am nursing my son, I think about them, the mothers in detention. The ones who were nursing too, until they weren't. The ones whose milk came in with nowhere to go. I think about them because motherhood does not end at a border. It does not disappear in a detention center. A mother is a mother, whether she is in her home or in a cage.

This administration must be held accountable. And so must this state. California cannot call itself a sanctuary while mothers are being broken inside its borders, inside its detention facilities, inside their own bodies.

We name this for what it is: a reproductive justice crisis. That is why we organize. That is why we hold pláticas, spaces where women can tell the truth of their lives, often for the first time. We are pushing Los Angeles for a rent moratorium to protect families displaced by raids. We are building a network of community leaders who carry this truth into every neighborhood, every living room, every kitchen table conversation across LA.
